2024 Rivian R1T | 2024 Tesla MY (until our Rivian R2 or Slate arrives)
I have no idea what Slate will ultimately be, but I love the courage and innovation to do autos differently and I think their business model could really appeal to a younger, less affluent generation of buyers. My Rivian is amazing, but my 35-yr-old self could never have afforded it. A personalized Slate though? Yeah, I could have swung that back then. It's an awesome concept. I'm in!

And with that, I present the Cosmic Slate version 1.0 (I'm sure many more configurations will follow). If you want to configure your own, I strongly encourage a visit to their website: www.slate.auto.

(I posted this to the Rivian Forum, but wanted to crosspost it here as well.)

I placed a reservation last night and I just received an email encouraging me to "Make" my Slate in the configurator (clearly Slate hasn't seen the post of my super incredible Cosmic Slate above and have so far missed being dazzled by my design skills).

I think this concept - approachable, bare-bones EV truck - is a play to capture the "Maker Space/Maker Culture" of Gen Z and Gen Alpha. A younger generation of buyers who might start to reject the culture that was imposed on them (screens everywhere, etc) and make purchasing decisions that are the opposite of their parents and grandparents (so much "instant garbage" purchases, excess at every turn, etcetera and so forth).

Every generation creates a new sense of what is "theirs" and what is "cool" by often rejecting what existed when they arrived. Perhaps Slate is tapping into a youth culture zeitgeist with a basic EV that will be cool simply because it's simple. And customizable. Imagine the maker culture possibilities around their basic offerings. So much possibility and so innovative. An Etsy-style store with a company that actually promotes doing things differently and doesn't discourage modifications? I love it!

So many choices for sure. Here's two ideas I wouldn't mind trying out.

If they're promising no paint and only wraps it will be interesting to see what they will let customers come up with if anything.

Hi y'all!

I heard about Slate through a crosspost on the Maverick Truck Club forum. My husband and I love the Mav, we've bought two in the past. And when I showed my husband the elevator pitch video for Slate, like me, he was instantly intrigued. 👀

While it really will come down to pricing, I love the concept of Slate! The US needs more affordable vehicles, that still perform and provide functionality for everyday use. And we should be embracing EV's and smaller vehicles as a whole, so I'm onboard with all that. If we order a Slate, it won't be replacing our Maverick, but it would be a companion vehicle; something that can be used for small trips around town or work commutes. And the DIY aspect of Slate is also fun and refreshing to see!

I'm fine with the stripped down vehicle, but the one thing I can see myself actively disliking is that there are only two doors, regardless of body configuration. That will make loading babies into car seats very cumbersome and I promised myself I wouldn't own another 2-door vehicle again... And yet, Slate might win me over. We'll see. 🤞

Anyways, I'm happy to be part of this community and keep an eye on Slate news! Here is our current build. We are calling her "Gypsy" after Gypsy Danger in Pacific Rim (yes, we are nerds!). 🤖

I've optioned nothing on the inside other than the stereo speakers. I'd probably get the brown accent panels all over if they're cheap enough. I am not sure if I'll do the white bottom portion but I am going to try to get as close to a deep emerald green as I can get. That was the color of my first car and I've always liked it.

It's strikingly similar in shape to my Geo, almost like a long wheelbase version with that spare tire mount on the back!

Very basic for my needs. Just going to be around towner (but might get extended battery pack if its affordable).
Pickup truck for everything the full size can't do and any in-town errands. Those in-town errands really pile up the miles that my Jeep doesn't need and is too thirsty for.

First EV, pretty excited for the potential. In the past I reserved the cybertruck and Bollinger but both turned out to be way too expensive for what they offered.

GM Emerald Green metallic is also my favorite.

I'm inclined to take a less-is-more approach: Off-road Tires + Lift, Fender Flares, Blacktop cab wrap, Front Light Upgrade.

If a well-designed lockable bed cover (tonneau) were available I'd opt for that as well.

Door Cubbies and Rubber Floor Liner would add some interior practicality.
